This year in the run up to Christmas CASE has teamed up with local social enterprise Tomorrow Together to collect food and other items in support of food banks across Leicester.
The aim is to make and donate at least 10 hampers for distribution to local families in need this Christmas.
Why are we doing this?
Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Food banks provide emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis.
In 2012 13 food banks fed 346,992 people nationwide. Of those helped, 126,889 were children.
The rising costs of food and fuel combined with static income, high unemployment and changes to benefits are causing more and more people to approach food banks for help.
Leicester has seen a growing need for food banks from families and individual living on the bread line.
Food banks also make time to chat and to signpost clients to other helpful services.
What are we collecting?
The main need is for essential food items such as pasta, rice, sugar, tea, coffee, breakfast cereals and soup. Toiletry items such as soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes are also welcome. However luxury items are also appreciated and will be welcomed by people receiving the Christmas hampers.
What can I do?
We would like you to bring donations of tinned or dried foods to the CASE office at 1 The Crescent, King Street, Leicester, LE1 6RX.
You can drop items off at between 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Alternatively we can arrange to collect if necessary – just let us know.
All donations are welcome, however small. There are a lot of ‘buy one get one free’ deals around at the moment and these are ideal ways to collect food and toiletry items.
We would also be pleased to receive donations of gift wrap and boxes or baskets suitable for decorating as food hampers.
