More than six million people are members of the Co-operative Group, the UK’s biggest mutually owned business which has a turnover of more than £13 billion and aims to boost that number to 20 million by 2020.
The largest 300 co-operatives in the world are together worth $1.6trillion and compete in some of the world’s most competitive markets.
However, co-operatives are about more than just profits. The co-operative business model allows all members to have an equal say in what the business does and brings many benefits.
Across the UK, co-operatives are owned by nearly 13 million people – and these numbers keep on
growing! In Leicestershire alone we have over 100 co-operatives including Housing Co-operatives, Worker Co-operatives, Products and Services, Agriculture Co-operatives and much more.
Local co-operatives provide childcare, grow and sell organic food, advocate for people with disabilities, sell fairtrade goods and allow people to express themselves through drama, painting, singing and many other activities as well as a host of other businesses.
